Terms and Conditions


  • Registration fee is $25 (subject to change). 

  • All fees are non-refundable. 

  • Payment is through PayPal (accepts major credit cards). 

  • Once your fee is paid, an email with the subject line "SATO48-2020 - Registration Next Steps..." will be sent to you.


  • SATO48 is open to all, including amateur filmmakers, hobbyists, and professionals (if unpaid).

  • At least one member of the team must be present at the Kickoff (defined as Friday, April 17, 2020). For Participants  beyond 50 miles from the Kickoff venue, remote presence is allowed. 

  • Participants under 18 years of age must have parental / guardian consent. 

  • Participants are defined as anyone who assisted in any way in the making of your Film. 



  1. All IP elements revealed to you at the Kickoff must be incorporated into your Film. 

  2. Your Film must feature at least TWO principal characters. 

  3. You may use a combination of voiceover talent, on-screen talent, or a single actor playing multiple roles.


    • Delivery Must be on a thumb drive (which will be returned at the Screenings). 

    • Format Must be MPEG-4 (.mp4) ONLY. 

    • Size Must be less than 4GB. 

    • File Name Must be named: Team# - Team Name - Film Name. 

    • Length Must be 5 (five) minutes or less by timecode (00:05:00:00) ("Film") 

    • Event Credits Your Film MUST include: 

      • Opening Event Credits ("OEC"): 

        • Your Team Name 

        • APRIL 19, 2020 

        • Your Film Title 

      • Closing Event Credits ("CEC"): 

        • This film was made as part of SATO48–2020 

        • SATO48.com 

          • CEC Text – must be the final moment of your Film 

          • CEC Text – must be on screen for at least 5 seconds 

          • CEC Text – must be Arial font, 46 pitch 

          • CEC Text – must be white text on black background 

          • CEC Text – must always: 

            • For every future screening, posting, or exhibition of the Film, or any portion thereof,  in any medium, the CEC Text must always appear as described herein and may not be edited out, nor reduced in screen time, nor distorted in screen appearance. 

            • For any descriptive text (searchable, printed, or otherwise) that accompanies the film, or any portion thereof, must always contain a reference to "SATO48-2020".

  • VIDEO SHOOT RELEASE — Must deliver signed (digital or analog, in lieu of 'signature' email permission is  allowed) originals of all four Releases: 

    • Crew Release 

    • Cast Release 

    • Location Release 

    • Music Release 

  • MUSIC REPORT — Must deliver a comprehensive Music Report, regardless of source. 

  • CERTIFICATION & CONSENT — When you submit your Film you will be required to sign a Certification &  Consent. 


  • On your Nominations Form, indicate using timecode where the nominated Song or Music starts.

  • You may use “royalty free” music or songs but you CAN NOT nominate them, nor win the Music Award.

  • The only Musicians (including yourself) who can be nominated for the BEST MUSIC / SONG AWARD are  Musicians: 

    • Who have created music or song specifically for your Film during the 48-hour period, 

    • OR Who have existing music to which you have obtained the rights by specific request (i.e., not as  the result of a pre-existing "royalty free" or "Art Libre" relationship). 

  • A hard-copy print out of the rights request, and the Musician(s)' agreement that you may use their music,  constitutes a "Release" and does not require a signature on your Music Release. 

  • You must submit the request and Musician(s)' agreement along with your Music Release when you turn in  your Film. 



    • ALL nominations (except Poster Artist) must be entered on the Nominations Form when you turn in your  Film. 

    • NOTE: Your Film is NOT eligible for awards if a name is not entered in a nomination category.  It is to your  advantage to enter a name in every category by the time you turn in your Film.




    • PRIOR TO the Kickoff Participants may: 

      • Organize crew & cast, including securing a poster artist; 

      • Secure & assemble equipment (i.e., expendables, cameras, editing suite, software, etc.); 

      • Scout & secure locations; 

      • Source music; 

      • Arrange for food, financing, transportation, etc. 

    • BETWEEN the Kickoff and May 3, 2020, 12am (midnight), Participants may: 

      • Post online a “TRAILER” for their Film that does not exceed 30 seconds. The trailer may contain any material  you wish. You must first upload the trailer (on your Nominations Form UPLOAD Page) prior to posting online.  


    • DO NOT POST your Film online (except a trailer as mentioned above) in any way, shape or manner for any  audience of any kind, before Sunday, May 3, 2020, 12:00am (midnight). 

    • Violation of this Posting Rule will mean your Film is not eligible for any Awards or Prizes. 

    • DO NOT shoot, nor create, any footage for your Film prior to the Kickoff. 

    • DO NOT use stock footage of any kind. 

    • DO NOT use footage created prior to the Kickoff. 

    • DO NOT use copyrighted material of any kind without permission.  This includes music, signage, likenesses,  etc. 

    • DO NOT nominate any music or song for the Best Music / Song Award obtained through a "royalty-free," or  "Art Libre" licensed relationship, e.g., from Creative Commons / Jamendo. 

    • DO NOT pay anyone on your team.  Each member of the Filmmaking Team must VOLUNTEER his or her time.


    • Not fulfilling the Inspiration Package requirements. 

    • Not fulfilling the Technical requirements 

    • Not fulfilling the Paperwork requirements 

    • Not fulfilling the Music / Song requirements 

    • Not fulfilling the Nominations requirements 

    • Violating any of the Rules 



  • Any type, and number, of video, film or still cameras, and/or sound equipment may be used, including computer generated material that is created AFTER the Kickoff. 



  • Participation in the Movie Poster competition is voluntary, though encouraged. 

  • To be eligible for the Movie Poster Award you must upload (on the UPLOADS page of your NOMINATIONS FORM)  your poster on or before Wednesday, April 22, 2020, 12pm (midnight). 

  • We will print and laminate the Poster for you. 

  • If your Film was late, you may still submit a Poster but it will not eligible for the Movie Poster Award. • Late Poster entries will be displayed at the discretion of the Poster curator. 



    • This is an agreement between you as Team Producer, plus every person involved in the making of your Film  (herein known collectively as Participants), and Hlabeard Productions (herein known as Organizer) with respect to Participants' involvement in Springfield And The Ozarks - 48 Hour Film Challenge - 2020 (herein known as  SATO48) pursuant to the terms herein. 

    • Participants hereby agree to take part in SATO48, being produced by the Organizer and scheduled to take  place from April 17 - 19, 2020, by creating a film (the Film) that adheres to the guidelines stated herein, the four  Releases (“Releases”), the Certification Agreement, and any and all other documents referenced herein. 3.       It is understood that Organizer reserves the right to screen or exhibit the Film only if it adheres to all the  terms referenced herein. 

    • Participants hereby understand that he/she/they are responsible for all crew, cast, equipment, sets,  locations, and other items necessary for participating in SATO48, and all costs, expenses, damages and claims  related thereto. 

    • The Organizer is providing (i) the event and guidelines in which the Participants are taking part; (ii) a  screening opportunity for all the eligible work; and (iii) based on available funds, prize(s) for the winner(s) (all  decisions of all judges are final). 

    • Participants hereby affirm that he/she/they will secure all rights to all elements, including but not limited to  images, poster art, sounds and music used in the Film and will secure Cast, Crew, Music and Location Releases  from all parties, all of which rights also belong to Organizer. 

    • Releases and all other documents are available now at http://www.sato48.com/filmmakers-resources. 


    • Participants hereby affirm that he/she/they indemnify, save and hold harmless Organizer, Organizer's staff  and volunteers, from any and all claims, costs, damages, expenses and liabilities arising from the creation, use or  participation hereunder of the Film (including, but not limited to claims for negligence and other torts,  unauthorized exhibition, discrimination, fraud, infringement and breach of contract). 

    • Participants also hereby release the Organizers, all members of its staff, and all volunteers engaged in  SATO48 activities of any kind, from any and all liability, and further agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and defend  any and all such members, staff, or volunteers from and against any and all claims which might be made against  them arising out of Participants' involvement in SATO48. 

    • Participants will not violate any traffic laws in fulfillment of their participation in SATO48. Participants specifically release the Organizers, all members of its staff, and all volunteers engaged in SATO48 activities of any  kind, from any and all liability, and further agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and defend any and all such  members, staff, or volunteers from and against any and all claims which might be made against them arising out  of Participants' promise to not violate any traffic laws. 


    • Participants and Organizer agree that all parties have unlimited worldwide rights to the Film.  This includes,  in perpetuity, the right to screen, show, exhibit, broadcast or disseminate in any way possible the Film, including  use of any discrete elements in the Film, and any and all materials, including poster art, associated with the Film. This includes, but is not limited to, the right to broadcast and streaming services now in existence, or future  incarnations, and any and all interviews conducted as part of SATO48-2020 by Participants.

    • Participants and Organizer hereby acknowledge that participation in SATO48 does not grant remuneration  or compensation whatsoever to any party, including any future use of the Film, or its elements, by any party.

    • The only consideration for participating in SATO48 is the screening of the Participants' Film so long as it  meets all the criteria described herein. 


    • Participants hereby acknowledge that a Making of SATO48 documentary (the Documentary) and/or SATO48  The TV Show may be shot during SATO48, and Participants hereby agree to allow camera crews to tape  Participants during any stage of SATO48, including pre-production, production, post-production, and any event  associated with SATO48, including but not limited to the public screenings, any Awards Ceremony, and any  AfterParty. 

    • This in no way, however, obligates the Organizers to produce or exhibit the Documentary and/or SATO48  The TV Show. 


    • Headings in this document are for reference purposes only. 

    • The terms of this Participation Agreement, and all documents referenced herein, may only be changed in writing  signed by all parties.
